1. Institute of Economic Development
The Institute of Economic Development, as part of ECUST’s education reform program, was founded in 1987 by several economists.
The aim of the institute is to, by combining the modern economic theories and China’s economic reality, promote the innovation and development of the research in economic theories in China and provide valuable reference for China’s economic development. The institute mainly focuses on the following areas of research: regional economic theories and application, theories and application of spatial economics, public economics, new institutional economics, development economics, industrial organization, etc. The institute has completed or is undertaking a large number of research programs supported by international cooperation foundations and national, ministerial and provincial foundations; as well as quite a few research projects commissioned by governments at different levels and companies. Research results are given prominence by government policy-making organizations, companies and the academic community, many of them winners of science and technology awards at the provincial level or above; 7 of the faculty members have been awarded the Sun Zhifang Economics Prize.
The Institute of Economic Development maintains close cooperation with national and overseas academic institutions, government organs and enterprises, conducting academic exchanges and annual national or international academic symposiums under the theme of China’s economic development. The institute has also engaged a few prominent Chinese and foreign economists as visiting research fellows or co-researchers.
2. Institute of European Studies
The Institute of European Studies was established in 1999 as a research organization to study the business and trade relations between China and Europe. It has maintained sound academic relations with national and overseas European affairs research institutes and enjoys a fair level of prestige in China’s academic community.
The institute carries out research in European and international affairs, and offers policy research and consulting services to Chinese companies that are interested in expanding overseas markets. Currently the institute’s major areas of research include Economy in European countries, European integration, economic globalization, economic policy coordination with the European Union, and the bilateral political, trade and economic cooperation between China and Europe.
The institute has completed several projects supported by national, ministerial and provincial foundations.
3. Institute of E-business
The Institute of E-Business was established in 2003 as a university-level academic research organization to support the development of e-business in various types of organizations against the backdrop of informationization. The staff is made up of 10 members including 3 professors, 5 associate professors and 2 assistant professors. After over a decade of development, the institute has carries out research programs in e-business, e-health, big data analysis, knowledge management, technology management, social networking, information system user behavior, and corporate innovation. Currently, major areas of research include the following:
1) Smart business and big data analysis with a focus on the application of smart business and big data in the fields of e-business, e-health, etc.;
2) Knowledge management and service with a focus on the solution of actual problems faced by companies through methods in knowledge management and social networking;
3) Technology system management with a focus on agent-based energy technology evolution theories;
4) Information system user behavior with a focus on the behavior of users in using the information system;
5) IT companies’ innovation and entrepreneurial attempts with a focus on the regularities of the innovative and entrepreneurial activities in small- and medium-sized IT companies.
The institute is now undertaking 6 programs supported by the National Natural Science Foundation and 1 by the Ministry of Education Social Science and Humanities Research Foundation. Over 20 programs, some supported by national, provincial and ministerial foundations while others commissioned by companies, have been completed. Some of the research results have been officially adopted by government organs.
The current research interests of the institute are in data analysis and knowledge management. As for the former, long-term strategic partnership has been forged with data source companies and joint labs have been set up to provide data service to enterprises; with regard to the latter, the institute offers knowledge consulting and technology development service to several companies in the fields of chemistry and energy to upgrade their informationization and intelligentization progresses and support the industrial upgrading and transformation.
Following the philosophy of “flexibility, openness, moving with the times and connecting theories with reality”, the institute welcomes domestic and foreign experts, scholars and doctorate holders in related areas to join us and conduct cooperative research.
4. Institute of Financial Engineering
The Institute of Financial Engineering was founded in 2009 by a cohort of well-known young financial scholars. Among them, 5 have been selected as the leaders of projects supported by ministerial or provincial talent programs. Related research results are of great influence in the international academic community.
The purpose of the institute is to closely connect theories of financial engineering with China’s reality in the financial industry, thus promoting the innovation and development of the research in the field of financial engineering theories in China and providing valuable reference to the development of and practice in China’s financial market. The institute’s major areas of research include econophysics, financial market risk management, asset pricing, etc.
The Institute of Financial Engineering is closely cooperating with national and foreign academic institutions to conduct academic exchanges and run doctoral degree programs.
5. Institute of Energy Economics and Environment Management
The Institute of Energy Economics and Environment Management (IEEEM) was established in 2009. It includes researchers in the areas where lies ECUST’s most notable strength, e.g. economics, management, recourses and environment, energy and chemistry.
IEEEM aims to promote the research in the fields of energy economy and environmental management in China, providing policy consulting and support to government organizations and companies. The institute’s major areas of research include energy technology system modeling, technical and economic assessment of environmental projects, cyclic economy and industrial ecologicalization.
The institute has a high-caliber research team including a National Distinguished Young Scholar and a Chang Jiang Scholar. Researchers have published high-level academic papers in well-known national and international journals such as Management Science, European Journal of Operational Research, etc. IEEEM has established partnerships with international academic institutions such as International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, government organizations and enterprises, conducting academic exchanges and consulting as well as hosting annual national or international academic symposiums.
6. Institute of Operations and Supply Chain Management
The Institute of Operations and Supply Chain Management consists of prominent researchers from the School of Business, School of information Science and Engineering, School of Science and School of Mechanical and Power Engineering.
Capitalizing on the research achievements in petrochemical process engineering and the advantage of the subjects on the national “985” Platform, and taking into consideration of the need and demand of the government and enterprises, the Institute has been making every effort it can to push back the frontiers of the discipline of process management. It strives to explore in depth the areas of operations and logistics supply chain management so as to advance the development and application of the research results to the petrochemical industry, a pillar industry in China. The operational management research mainly covers petrochemical industry development policy and simulation, regional development strategy and planning of petrochemical industry, production planning of process industry and scheduling, production process modeling and simulation, equipment maintenance of process industry etc. The logistics supply chain management research focuses on industrial development policy and simulation of modern logistics, regional development strategy and planning of modern logistics, theories of modern logistics supply chain management and application.
The Institute has undertaken many research projects, including NNSF, national “863” projects, and projects at provincial level. It has also published a large number of high quality articles and its research achievements have been applied in some national key projects of petrochemical engineering. The Institute has established close connections with China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation and China National Petroleum Corp as well as a number of universities home and abroad.
7. Institute for Management and Organization Research
The Institute for Management and Organization Research (IMOR) aims to, with China’s reality as a point of reference, conduct research into frontier issues in the field of organization management through scientific methods. Its major research areas include the models, process and performance of Chinese enterprises’ internationalization drive as well as the Chinese style team management and its role in enterprise’s internationalization.
The institute has completed or is undertaking more than 10 research programs financed by the National Natural Science Foundation and other foundations at the ministerial or municipal levels. Academic papers have been published in top-tier national and international journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Management and Organization Review, Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Management World, Journal of Management Sciences in China, Nankai Business Review, Science Research Management， Business Review, etc.
The institute has forged academic cooperation with world-renowned international academic institutions such as Academy of Management (AOM) and International Association for Chinese Management Research as well as universities such as the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, Indiana University Kelly School of Business, University of San Francisco China Business Studies Initiative, Cleveland State University, the University of Melbourne, Australia, Hong Kong Baptist University, etc.
Honoring the motto of “pursuing excellence and serving the society”, IMOR aims to become a leading organization management research institute in China that enjoys prestige around the world. By voluntarily sharing research results with enterprises and the broader society, the institute hopes to contribute its humble share to the enhancement of Chinese enterprises’ competitiveness in the world.
8. Institute of Corporate Finance
The Institute of Corporate Finance aims at integrating internal academic resources, refining characteristic research directions, enhancing academic research level, expanding academic influence, and produce excellent research achievements in the field of corporate finance. Its main research areas include financial behavior of financing institutes, behavioral corporate finance and corporate governance.
9. Institute of Marketing Science
The Institute of Marketing Science (iMS) serves as a resources integration platform connecting the academic community, the industry and the government. Our mission is to create and spread new marketing theories and methods and promote the domestication and application of foreign marketing theories.
Based on the teaching staff and postgraduate students in the Department of Business Administration, the iMS faculty includes Professor Guo Yi, Professor Jing Fengjie, Associate Professor Hou Limin, Associate Professor Fei Hongping, Associate Professor Du Weiyu, Associate Professor Qi Haifeng, Associate Professor Chen Junsong, Associate Professor Bang Xuan Nguyen, assisstant professor Zhu Lin, etc. The post of overseas outreach director is assumed by Professor Wang Jing at Iowa University Tippie College of Business.
The institute’s major areas of research include corporate marketing strategies, brand management, consumer behavior and culture, product accident crisis and management, etc. Faculty members of iMS have led and completed several research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation and other foundations at ministerial and municipal levels. Academic papers have been published in prominent national and international journals including Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Journal of Consumer Marketing, Social Behavior and Personality, Journal of Marketing Science, Management Science, Economic Management, Advances in Psychological Science, Business Review, Nankai Business Review, Foreign Economies and Management, etc.
iMS mainly undertakes research programs entrusted by government organs, enterprises and other organizations; participates in the formulation and improvement of government policies; facilitates regional and national economic and social development; holds themed academic activities related to marketing; publishes high-level academic papers and books; contributes to the development of the marketing education system; and develops innovation-oriented marketing professionals.
10. Research Center of Human Resources
The Research Center of Human Resources was set up in 2004. Based on the Department of Business Administration, the center integrates researchers in the School of Business and School of Social and Public Administration as well as external researchers, giving rise to a cross-disciplinary research team.
The aim of the center is to promote the application and development of human resources management science, give advice to the government in management policy formulation and strategic planning, provide support regarding decision making to enterprises to assist their human resources management, and develop high-caliber professionals in the field of human resources management. The major areas of research at the center include human resources management, organizational behavior, human capital theories, internal knowledge and employee management, corporate leadership, employee psychological contract and employee relations, etc.
The center has a human resources management lab and boasts a “Shanghai Demonstration Course”—Human Resources Management, which is led by professors at the center. Members of the center have undertaken several programs financed by national, ministerial, provincial and municipal foundations. Besides, the center also offers consulting service and training sessions in corporate human resources management.
11. Research Center of Accounting Informatization and Financial Decision
The Research Center of Accounting Informatization and Financial Decision, established in 2006, is dedicated to the research in the theory of accounting informationization and it application. The major areas of study at the center include the formulation and implementation of accounting informationization regulations; the development and design of the accounting information system and financial decision making supporting system; standardized system building of accounting information; integration of finance, accounting and auditing in network setting; and ERP.
Members of the center include the deputy director of the Accounting Society of China Accounting Informationization Committee, experts at the Ministry of Finance Accounting Informationization Advisory committee, among others. The center has led and completed a dozen of projects financed by ministerial and municipal foundations. Besides, the members have also been involved in the formulation of several national and regional standards. The research results have won many awards such as the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, Ministry of Finance Excellent Papers Award, etc.
12. Center for Business English Teaching and Research
The Center for Business English Teaching and Research, formerly the Department of English for Business, was founded in 1990. At present it has a faculty of six academic staff including three professors and four assisstant professors.
For teaching and research, the Center offers support to the professional English teaching for both bachelor’s and master’s degree students, business English teaching for the students of professional degree center, some bilingual teaching in the field of economics and business management, Sino-foreign country cooperation and international standard accreditation.
Now the Center focuses on the research in international business and business English and actively carries out academic cooperation and exchange with its counterparts both at home and abroad.
13. Research Center for Virtual Business
The Research Center for Virtual Business, based on ECUST School of Business, incorporates researchers both within and outside the university, forging a cross-disciplinary research team in virtual business that has distinctive advantages and develops at a fast speed.
With a general interest in the research in virtual business, the center pays particular attention to virtual economy, virtual finance, e-business, supply chain management, third-part logistics, fourth-party logistics, etc. Undertaking projects supported by the national “973 Program” and “863 Program”, the center is dedicated to addressing the frontier issues in retailing business with the major national strategic demands as a point of reference. The main area of interest of the center is the economic, financial, operational and management issues in retail business. Specific emphasis is attached to virtual business value system; virtual asset pricing system; virtual financial product pricing; new operational models of virtual business; overall logistics and transport management in a virtual business environment; the optimization and integration of virtual business supply chain; and the theories, methods and application of virtual business platform R&D. The center strives to make world-leading progress in the above areas, thus promoting the application and advancement of related theories in China’s business service industry.
14. Center for Energy Economics and Environmental Management
The Center for Energy Economics and Environmental Management (IEEEM), harnessing the School’s strength in management science and engineering and of economics which highlight research in energy and chemistry, introduces the key national discipline of chemistry project and engineering which ranks the 2nd in the third round of the national discipline assessment. The integration of the researchers in the above four level-one disciplines gives a full play to the research advantages and cross-disciplinary strength of the School of Business in related areas and lays a solid foundation for future research.
To encourage the development of management research institute aimed at solving major social and economic issues, ECUST set up IEEEM in 2009. In 2013, to beef up the research capacity of the center, expand its financial resources and enhance its influence, ECUST and Sinopec jointly financed the establishment of the SINOPEC-ECUST Energy and Chemical Industry Research Center in Economics & Management. It is led members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.Wang Jiming, director of the former Division of Project Management of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chairman of the ECUST Board of Trustees. The center’s regular operation is in the charge of Mr. Wu Bojun, dean of the School of Business. The research center is dedicated to the research and academic exchanges in economic management in the industries of energy and chemistry and the development of researchers in this regard.
15. SINOPEC-ECUST Energy and Chemical Industry Research Center in Economics & Management
The SINOPEC-ECUST Energy and Chemical Industry Research Center in Economics & Management was jointly founded by ECUST and Sinopec. It is a soft science research institute based on Sinopec Research Institute for Economics & Technology and ECUST School of Business.
With the research in the area of the energy and chemistry industry management as the academic foundation and promoting the sustainability of the industry as its mission, the center conducts in-depth research into the areas of energy and chemistry industrial policies, technology economy, energy finance, industrial spatial arrangement and optimization, and supply chain management. The center aims at developing senior managers in the energy and chemistry industries and enhancing China’s theoretical and managerial strength in this area.
